Two rates feed one balance
EPF is credited twice a month: 11% from the employee's wage and, for an employee under 60, 13% from the employer up to RM5,000 of wage and 12% above it. Both go into the member's account. The employer share is the part people forget, and it is the reason a modest balance compounds into a large one over a working life.
Dividends, not just contributions, build the pot
The projection compounds the balance monthly at the dividend rate you enter. Histories of around five to six per cent are what EPF has declared recently, and the difference between five and six per cent over twenty-five years is measured in hundreds of thousands of ringgit. Nothing here is promised: the dividend is declared annually on the year's investable balance, so treat the rate as a scenario, not a forecast.
Your account is split three ways
Since the 2024 restructuring, contributions under 55 land in Akaun Persaraan (75%), Akaun Sejahtera (15%) and Akaun Fleksibel (10%). Only the Fleksibel portion can be withdrawn on demand; the Sejahtera portion covers housing, education and health; the Persaraan portion is locked until 55. This calculator treats the pot as one number, which is right for a retirement projection and wrong for a cash-flow question, so check the split before counting on a withdrawal.
Worked projection: RM4,000 a month at 30
A member on RM4,000 with RM50,000 saved and 25 years to 55 adds RM960 a month, and at a 6.15% dividend the pot reaches about RM912,579 by 55, of which only RM338,000 is contributions. That is the compounding story in one line. Halve the rate and the same contributions produce a materially smaller pot, which is exactly the assumption to stress first.
What the projection ignores
It ignores pay rises, so contributions are understated, and it ignores withdrawals, so the pot is overstated. It also ignores the point at which contributions stop and the rules for members past 60. Use it to see the order of magnitude of a working life of saving, not to plan a specific retirement income.
Checking the projection against i-Akaun
The contribution split here should match your payslip line for line. Verify it in i-Akaun, where every credit and its date are listed, rather than waiting for an annual statement. If the employer share is short, or a month is missing, raise it with HR and then with EPF; unpaid contributions are recoverable, but only while the records still exist. Once the split is confirmed, the projection is only as good as the dividend rate you chose, so run one pass at five per cent and one at six to see the spread.
Frequently asked
Can I withdraw EPF before 55?
From Akaun Fleksibel, at any time. The other two accounts release for housing, education and medical purposes under the published conditions, and the full balance becomes available at 55.
Is the dividend guaranteed?
No. EPF declares a dividend each year on the investable balance. Recent declarations have been around five to six per cent, but the rate is not contractual and varies with returns.
What is the employer rate above RM5,000?
12% of wage. Below and up to RM5,000 it is 13%. The rate steps down once wages pass the threshold.
Does overtime count towards EPF?
Ordinarily yes, along with most allowances. Travelling allowances, gratuity and most termination benefits sit outside the Third Schedule and do not attract a contribution.
