Malaysian Car Hire-Purchase Calculator

Every car loan offer in Malaysia quotes a flat interest rate — 2.5%, 3.2%, 3.75% — and every one of them understates the true cost. Hire purchase charges interest on the full financed amount across the whole tenure, so the effective annual rate is roughly 1.7–1.9× the quoted flat rate. This calculator does the conversion for you so you can compare two offers on equal footing.

Hire-purchase rates in the market right now

Car financing is quoted as a flat rate, which is not the same as the effective rate you actually pay. Monthly tax deduction is withheld before the instalment leaves the account, so the affordable instalment is smaller than gross pay suggests. Frequently asked

What is a good flat rate for a car loan in Malaysia?

For a new national-brand car, 2.4% to 3.2% flat is the current market band; imported cars sit slightly above. Anything past 3.5% flat on a new car is worth shopping around.

Why does my settlement figure look wrong?

Hire purchase pre-computes the whole interest charge, then rebates the unearned part on the Rule of 78. In the first two years the rebate is small, so settling early saves far less than the schedule suggests.

Is a longer tenure cheaper?

The instalment is lower but the flat rate is applied over more years, so total interest climbs. A 9-year loan at 3.0% flat costs more than a 7-year loan at 3.3% flat in total interest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two car loan offers with different tenures?

Convert both to effective rates (shown in the results panel) and compare total interest paid, not the monthly instalment. A 9-year offer at 3.0% flat costs more total interest than a 7-year offer at 3.3% flat, even though the instalment looks smaller.

What's a good hire-purchase rate in Malaysia right now?

National-brand new cars typically get 2.5%–3.5% flat; used cars and longer tenures push toward 4%+. Banks and captives (UMW, Honda, Toyota financing) run promotions — compare the effective rate of each promo, not the headline flat rate.

Is hire purchase the same as a bank loan for cars?

In practice yes — hire purchase is the standard structure for car financing in Malaysia. The finance company owns the car until the final instalment; you can't sell it freely until the HPT is released.

Should I put more than 10% down?

If you have spare cash earning less than your loan's effective rate (~5–6%), yes — a bigger down payment is a guaranteed return equal to the interest saved. Just keep an emergency fund intact.
