Malaysian Personal Loan & DSR Calculator

Unlike car hire purchase, Malaysian personal loans are true amortising loans — the advertised rate is the actual rate. That makes comparison straightforward: same amount, same tenure, lower rate wins. This calculator gives you the instalment, total interest, and a DSR check against your monthly income so you know whether the bank will even approve it.

Personal loan pricing right now

Personal loans are quoted flat or on a reducing balance depending on the product. The flat-to-effective gap is the single biggest trap in this category. Net pay after PCB is what the instalment is actually serviced from, so settle that before comparing a flat quote with an effective one. As at 19 October 2026. Indicative only — confirm with the bank or BNM.

Frequently asked

Why is the effective rate on a personal loan so much higher?

A flat rate is charged on the original amount for the whole tenure, even as the balance falls. Multiplying the flat rate by roughly 1.8 gives the effective rate, which is the number to compare.

What DSR room does a personal loan use?

The full instalment counts against your DSR, so a RM675 instalment can remove around RM100,000 of housing loan capacity at a 65% limit.

Can I settle a personal loan early?

Usually, subject to a rebate under the Rule of 78 or a fixed early-settlement charge. Ask for the settlement figure in writing before committing.

Frequently asked questions

How much personal loan can I get on RM5,000/month?

Banks typically allow total DSR up to 60–70%. With no other debts and a 5-year personal loan at 7%, RM5,000/month supports roughly RM95,000–105,000. With an existing car loan instalment of RM1,000, that drops to around RM70,000.

What fees come with a Malaysian personal loan?

Typical: RM10–50 processing fee, 0.5% stamp duty on the agreement (often absorbed), and annual service tax on the interest. Some banks bundle credit insurance (MPI) — optional but it protects your family; check whether it's financed into the loan, which raises your total cost.

Why do advertised 'from' rates differ from what I'm offered?

The 'from' rate is reserved for top-tier profiles: high income, government or GLC employment, clean CCRIS. Your actual rate depends on your scoring. Always check your approved rate before accepting — and use the calculator to see what it really costs.

Can I repay a personal loan early?

Yes, most banks allow early settlement. Watch for early settlement charges — typically 1–2% of the outstanding balance or a few months' interest. Compare the charge against the interest you'd save; the calculator's total-interest figure shows what you're escaping.
